Series of photographs of men gathered in a ya-gwa- (small house), also known as a ghost house, in a port town. Harbour workers, umintu (fishermen) who have just returned from fishing, the unemployed, vagrants... This is a men-only world where men gather for a moment's peace of mind by sharing money to buy alcohol, or by being treated by those with money. At first glance, these men may appear to be a group of gruff old men, but Ishikawa was fascinated by the honesty of their lives and the honesty with which they lived their lives. At the request of photographer Keizo Kitajima, the exhibition was shown for the first time in more than 20 years as a stand-alone series at the Shinjuku Photographers' Gallery in February 2012, and attracted a lot of attention. Shomei Tomatsu was involved in the selection of prints for the exhibition. Cover design by Mutsu Minoru Naga, editing and layout by Kenshichi Heshiki.
